New York City Markets and Shopping Districts

If you are looking for the best places to find materials to create a veil for a bride, or an African gown, there are very few places that are known to sell these items. The following are some of the most known places to shop with discounted prices.

Orchard Street Shopping District
Found beginning at 261 Broome Street, this district is home to almost 400 stores. These stores offer European designer fashions, lingerie, handbags, shoes, and other odds and ends. Most of the things that you will find there will have up to 25% off. The market is closed Friday afternoon and all day Saturday because of the Jewish Sabbath. Do not go on a Sunday. It's a mad house.

Malcolm Shabazz Harlem Market
This market is an open air market that mostly sells African clothing, instruments, and crafts. It is run by Senegalese merchants who listen to Zook music as they sell their items. The market is often moved because of "big business" chains. Currently it is found between 115th and 116th street and 5th avenue. The market runs between 10 am to 7 pm.

Garment District
Imagine planning your wedding and racking your brain trying to find inexpensive items for your wedding party as well as for you. This is what I did- until I went to the Garment District. This is the place where most of the clothing that people wear are put together and shipped out. Located at W 42nd street and North of W 29th Street and between 6th and 9th avenue, the shops all up and down these streets sell items like costume jewelry and other accessories, clothing, etc. All of these items you can find at a reasonably discounted price. At a bridal shop or store or even online website, you can expect to pay about $100 for a veil with a tiara. I couldn't afford this, so I went to the Garment District. I bought the veil material and the tiara separately and put them together myself. I spent a total of $45 on my bridal veil. This is the place to get the deals. Also, if you pay by cash, most of these places will not charge tax.

Wholesale District
Wholesale prices is what every shopper wants. The Wholesale District, which is found between W 27th and 30th street and 7th avenue, has these prices. You can buy anything from chocolate to makeup at wholesale prices. There are a few clothing places there but it is more for the "other" category.
